It’s interesting, then, that they’re being brought to a portable adventure, since the original NSMB didn’t feature them, either. The Koopalings are once again bosses, as screenshots have pointed out. 2 also borrows some attributes from its Wii counterpart. Finally, the games share one new factor: coin blocks that stick to the plumber’s head and feed him coins as he progresses(albeit this time it’s adorned with an adorably blocky version of Mario’s visage). Both power-ups are collected via a brown Power Leaf, and both grant Mario a tail-swinging attack. While 3D Land took the Tanooki Suit, NSMB2 has donned the Raccoon Suit. Additionally, both games use one of that game’s many suit power-ups. Unique platforms such as the bouncy Note Blocks and multicolored platforms and pipes are all present and accounted for. The general aesthetic of both games draws heavily from seminal classic Super Mario Bros. While this may seem obvious, it’s worth pointing out that the graphics are of similar quality from being on the same system. In many ways, NSMB2 seems to be following in the footsteps of its older brother, Super Mario 3D Land. Taking a step back from any preconceived notions, let’s take a look at what 2 has to offer. Others are simply excited for the fact that it is a new, colorful, and joyous romp through the Mushroom Kingdom. Some say it’s a testament to the stagnancy of the series at large a typical side-scroller that does little different than its predecessors. The game itself seems to have divided players into two camps. 2 at Nintendo’s 3DS conference, so it’s safe to say the game is a prominent member of the company’s handheld lineup. A considerable amount of light was shed on New Super Mario Bros. Now that E3’s landslide of information has subsided, it seems like a good time to look back on some of the information learned about upcoming titles, and use that information to talk about what could be to come.
